Finding Innovative Alternatives to Work (FIAT)
For some people supported
at DakotAbilities, work is not meaningful or not possible due to the person's physical limitations. For these people we
provide alternative services based either out of their home or the Center & Norton locations. Alternative Services and
FIAT both provide a way for people to connect with their community through concerts, shopping, art shows, and several
other activities based in the community. Individuals go bowling, fishing, swimming, to movies, to bingo and other events
where they normally have had limited opportunity to participate.
There are around 50 people we serve who rotate through the Alternative Services program. Each person has an opportunity
to participate in some activity or event throughout the week. People supported by this program rotate through and do
note participate every day. They are given the choice of what they would like to do based on their preferences.
The FIAT program is a home-based program that allows people to stay at their home and participate in activities based
out of their homes. Many people involved in this program are uncomfortable in loud settings where there are a lot of
people and lots of activity. The homes provide a setting that is both quiet and comfortable.
These programs have made obvious differences in peoples lives. Through observation we can see that people are doing
things that are enjoyable and meaningful for them. They are also making new acquaintances and friends in the community.
