Approximately 70% of the people receiving services from DakotAbilities are unable to communicate verbally.
To assist with increased communication, people use a variety of resources including augmentative communication
devices, communication books/boards, and objects/switches. Individuals have input to develop accept/reject items
that will be included within their assistive devices.
DakotAbilities employs a Skills Specialist to assist people who have needs in this area. The staff provides
evaluation services to assist with determining people's needs. As appropriate, the staff assists people with
scheduling and participating in augmentative and alternative communication evaluations in the community.
These types of communication systems are both manual and electronic and can help people who are non-verbal or
have limited verbal communication skills.
